IGN beta hands-on

Re: IGN beta hands-on
Just started reading.
I fucking hate this guy already.
IGN Article wrote: I took my time and crafted the single ugliest alien I could possibly muster in the editor, decked him out in a fluorescent uniform, and lovingly nicknamed him Chud. You can also name your ship, give your character a full name, and even write a biography. Chud C. Chudderson, for example, captains the U.S.S. Chudmeister. His biography simply reads, "woah, man".

Confirmed. The author was a complete jackass who had nothing overtly positive nor negative to say.
Also, does this sentence make any sense to you guys? "Officer points aren't shared, though, so upgrading one means the others will miss out." If the points aren't shared than how does using them for one BOF deprive another BOF of them? Either they are shared and using them on one takes them from being used by another, or they aren't shared and the points are earned and spent individually per BOF. I'm confused.

Re: IGN beta hands-on
Yeah it wasn't a very good review (and of a beta to boot) but thought it best to be aware of it seeing a lot of folks will be reading it.
His meaning for BOff points is probably that you can't level them up as a group with one level bar like your character, but have to choose which BOff gets what amount of points... He just tried to spin it as negatively as possible (aren't + miss out).

It confuse me... I was under the impression that Engineering was the "tank" aka defender roll and not the "i buff u and allies" roll

It's fair to say that in the realm of SPACE, Cruisers are tanks. But in ground combat, Engineers provide buffs, they don't have base stats that allow them to take more damage than say a tactical officer.
Remember that you're essentially dealing with two games in one.

I thought I read that engineering gets an augmented buff to their personal shield systems so that even though their base attributes may not be overly high, they would be able to outlast a tactical officer since tactical gets a bonus to damage but not defense
Tactical : DPS
Engineering: Tanking
Science : Heals and DOTs
ofcourse i could have read wrong materials since the game isnt out yet

Re: IGN beta hands-on
I stopped reading that half way down, it felt like I was reading a review written by a twelve year old. The failed attempts at humour especially.
To some extent, I think whether you're DPS, tanking or support depends on how you build your character. Though some paths have more tools for the job than others, tactical having tools for dps and survivability but few support skills. I don't know for sure though, I haven't played it yet.

Re: IGN beta hands-on
Like Mars, I couldn't get through all of it...the writing was horrible.
Either way I know I want to play this game as a Tactical officer, but I hope I have the ability to take some engineering and science skills along the way.

I'm edging towards Science with an Escort ship. My XO is definitely Tactical.

Re: IGN beta hands-on
This review didn't change my mind on going science/science but I was under the impression that Science officers would be healers on the ground and buffs in space. Still not real clear on what a 'kit' is.

Re: IGN beta hands-on
They are healers in ground combat if you focus on medical skills, but their strength is with enemy debuffs vs friendly buffs, both in space and on the ground. That's my understanding.
I believe kits are similar to the gear and mission oriented equipment in Champions. Not entirely clear on that either.
