Building Starships - A Crafting in Star Trek Online Q&A with Al Rivera

New ideas for a new crafting system in STO
Questions by Benjamin J. de la Durantaye, Executive Editor, Ten Ton Hammer
Answers by Al Rivera, Star Trek Online (Cryptic Studios)

To many players, crafting in a MMOG is just as important as any other component and Star Trek Online is no different. This week Ten Ton Hammer had a nice lengthy chat with Al Rivera from Cryptic Studios who revealed all about tradeskills in STO. The crafting is quite unique, going where no MMOG has gone before. We know, that catchphrase is old, but it's true! Read on to hear all about how STO has added new ideas for a fresh crafting system.

Great interview, despite the numerous spelling mistakes...lol. Thanks Dru. cheers

The only thing I'm not sure of is, aren't we supposed to be able to customize our BOs? How can we customize them if we're trading them away to be trained by other players? Each Captain is limited to his division choice, such as a tactical captain would mainly excel at tactical training.

So how do we give them their names, histories, specific identities? The Memory Alpha crafting sounded pretty cool though.

    Any ideas?

BOF Crafting doesnt really sound like crafting to me... but okay cryptic. Memory Alpha sounds like it should be a good time though!

Interesting interview, and this basically confirms that there is no crafting in STO.
Looks like BOs will be a commodity just like resources, so there doesn't seem to be much point in shaping your crew and making back stories. Only your captain character will have any meaning in this regard. Keeping you original crew seems to go against game mechanics so more then likely this will mean a disadvantage in BO skills.

On the positive side, I like the Mem Alpha idea. Presumably there will still be some trading or swapping of items and resources, but finished items you have to get at a station. Question is, would this be the same for fleets and the fleet vault only contains the base ingredients, or can we have finished products stored as well?

I like it that there is some form of crafting, but the fact that everyone can craft everything isn't. Then the uniqueness of the specific item disappears.
I also like the non failiure aspect of crafting, God knows how much time I wasted with previous games trying to craft the best possible item and failed too many times doing that.

what we can do as a fleet is create our characters with back stories and have Knights that wish to participate train each others BOs and transfer them back after training.

It would be like all BOs have to go through a training program, at least for those that would be willing to participate.

    What do you guys think?

I think that would be handy. We're all going to have two types of BO we can't fully train on our own. It's also possible (though it's not mentioned in the article) that if we specialise, we won't be able to train BOs in different specialisations. We could possibly have a list of what each of our Captains can train.

That's a good idea Mars, a list would help facilitate a training program.

Could someone translate that Bridge Officer training information from Nerd into English please? I've read it a few times and I still can't make sense out of it. I guess I don't have a good frame of reference to compare it to.

It sounds like you can train BO, any BO but only the skills that are one level below your current rank. I.E. your a captain, you can only teach BO's commander rank (or lower) skills.

You can also visit other friends that have skills you don't & get them to teach your BO's new skills.

    That's it in a nutshell.

The way I see it, our own "academy" training could function much like the foreign student exchange program.
Lets say you are Tactical and I am Science. I send you an officer, you send me an officer, then we both train them in our specialty for a specified time or (better yet) a specified number of training levels. Then we each send the officer home at the same time. Rinse and repeat until satisfied.
